CBD and the Immuno-modulatory Effects on the Human Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

Research has proven the effectiveness of CBD in aiding the immune system; one of the most important features is its ability to maintain homeostasis or “balance” in the body. This is an especially important topic in current times regarding COVID-19 and the approaching cold/flu seasons. It is important to be conscious of one’s immune system and have the tools and resources to take care of it.

One of the things that concern doctors working with COVID-19 Patients is preventing the Cytokine Storm. Cytokines. Research describes this term as a, “…diverse group of small proteins that are secreted by cells for the purpose of intercellular signaling and communication.” (According to the National Institute of Health) These proteins can result in a “storm” that attacks its own cells and tissues rather than the virus in the body if the immune system is unhealthy. When this “storm” happens, it starves the healthy cells of oxygen needed to survive therefore resulting in possible eventual organ failure.

According to an NIH study published on July 10, 2020 "As of 25 May 2020, the outbreak of COVID-19 has caused 347,192 deaths around the world. The current evidence showed that severely ill patients tend to have a high concentration of pro-inflammatory cytokines... Recently, increasing studies indicate that the “cytokine storm” may contribute to the mortality of COVID-19." (1)

So, what does CBD have to do with cytokines? CBD has been proven in clinical trials to reduce the inflammatory cytokine process, quelling the Cytokine Storm, and restoring blood and oxygen levels as well as temperature regulation in the body. This study was specific to the lungs, an area of the body targeted by COVID-19 noting that, “…tissue overgrowth, scarring, and swelling had totally or partially resolved.”

Our bodies were created with an Endocannabinoid System which is a major contributing factor with immune system functions as well as healthy appetite, metabolic health, blood sugar regulation, weight management, pain responses, stress management, thermoregulation, eye health, mood, and memory if tended to properly.

Supplementing with CBD is crucial for the body’s needs. It is important to note the role our liver plays in our immune system and how that is related to CBD. Our livers are responsible for neutralizing pathogens, viruses, and even tumor cells. The CBD receptors we have in our livers can perform at their preferred level of function with the use of CBD products. Without the proper care of the receptors in the liver, it may lack the protection it needs.

According to research; CBD even has the ability to help with various autoimmune disorders aiding relief and restoring balance to the body. CBD also has the ability to assist in recovery with the following neurological disorders/traumas such as stroke, head injuries, cerebral ischemia, and neurodegenerative/ neuro- inflammatory illnesses.

In conclusion; according to research by various sources listed; CBD has the ability to regulate one’s Endocannabinoid receptors in the body, therefore, assisting in the protection of immune system functions; aiding in recovery from various degrees of illnesses and ailments.
